In the winter of 2011, the Design Trust For Public Space was in search of a graphic design fellow for their latest project – Five Borough Farm: Seeding the Future of Urban Agriculture in New York City - an initiative to strengthen the infrastructure of a flourishing urban agriculture movement in New York City.

As an organization dedicated to improving the city’s public space, the Design Trust has spearheaded projects such as Reclaiming the Highlinethe Taxi of Tomorrow, and more recently, Making Midtown. So we were truly honored when Kiss Me I’m Polish was selected to join the interdisciplinary team of experts working on this exciting and incredibly relevant project.

Five Borough Farm provides the most comprehensive portrait of the city’s urban agriculture activity to date. The publication (and companion website) recommends initiatives to connect the multifaceted grassroots efforts of city farmers and gardeners to municipal policy and urban health planning, simultaneously providing a concise framework for understanding and measuring how urban agriculture contributes to the health, social, economic, and ecological well-being of the city.

Throughout the course of the project, our team worked closely with the Design Trust and the project follows to create a unique brand for the campaign across various media, identify and conceptualize a suite of information graphics to explain key ideas and data points about urban agriculture in NYC
, as well as design the 150+ page publication containing all of the project’s findings and recommendations
 and the corresponding website platform.

Through maps, photographs, information graphics, and interviews with more than 100 stakeholders, Five Borough Farm illustrates how New York City’s 700+ community-based farms and gardens create jobs, educate youth, capture storm water, decrease the city’s waste stream, and create safe public spaces.

All in all, thanks to the incredible team of experts we had the opportunity to collaborate with and the multifaceted nature of the design deliverables we were tasked with, Five Borough Farm remains one of our favorite projects to date.
